the bay bridge toll plaza. we will now go to george in the traffic center. >> it is already a much bigger traffic. the traffic is already backing up all the way through the macarthur mayes. this is highway 580 and 24. 24 is backed up all the way to the tunnel. we may have a shot from our helicopter partnership with abc 7 news. you are looking at the ride heading westward from highway 24. the two right- hand lanes are trying to merge. the right lane traffic is tried to exit to get alta 580 westbound. >> where the back of would normally reach to children's hospital at has already backed up to the tunnel. the drive time is way over 26 minutes. and you can expect

strike to mark as well. we would just have to monitor this situation. that could easily decide that they would do the same thing with tools that comes. this is a whole nother issue but right now as far as these people are concerned they are happy that ac transit is running for them. >> thank you will >> taking a closer look at the safety issues bart union leaders say is holding up negotiations. union workers are demanding lighting improvements inside stations and along the tracks. they say this would increase worker safety and make it easier for riders to evacuate in case of an emergency. union leaders also want the bathrooms that were closed in 2001 to re open. they were closed after the nine eleven attacks and now, the union says they're a concern because of hygiene issues. also, workers want upgrades to bullet proof glass for station agents and better doors to protect against

kron four's justine waldman is live in alameda with an update on the ferry service, hi justine. >> i want to bring to you an update on how things are going. >> our first departure at 6:00 a.m.. we have a another two that are loading now and this will carry 700 people. we expect to be on time. we are operating every 45 minutes. so far the first departure was okay. >> you do not want people to park here. you want them to either ride a bike or did drop off. >> i think that is true for all of the terminals. these terminals have limited parking so if you can't beat a drop off it would be a

thanks justine. toss to traffic. >> the bay bridge and all of the approaches is very bad this morning. the backup is reaching completely through the macarthur mayes. the shore freeway is a nightmare. so was high with 24. 24 westbound is backed up all the way to the tunnels. it is even slow on the approach to the tunnel. the shore freeway we had these series of accidents and signallers for nearly 45 minutes. there was only one lane available. the traffic is backed up into vallejo. all of this heavy traffic is there to start working is way down.

>> all of these stations are not available this morning so that is why we are seeing the heaviest traffic. at the san mateo bridge the volume is up a bit and so was the approach. it is not nearly as bad as westbound. the golden gate bridge is likely to see heavier than normal traffic as long as with say francis drake boulevard. >> some of your alternatives that are available.

>> ac transit is probably your best option. there in the midst of contract negotiations as well but they do not have plans to strike today. all of the letter buses are running carry aig. they will get you ino the city and drop you off. remember, that they have to cross the bay bridge and used this freeway so you should give yourself extra time. there are a lot of people lined up tried to get a seat. ac transit is trying to accommodate everyone. most of them run about every 30 minutes. bart also has a contingency plan in place and this means tha will pick up passengers from the bart station. those zero

look at the traffic at the shore freeway. you concede that it is just jammed up. it will be extremely slow going for your ride. the traffic on all the approaches are completely backed up. this is why we are experiencing such a big delay. this is coming down high with 24 we are backed up solidly from the tunnel all away to the maze. a good friend of mine is actually taking one of the chartered buses. i spoke with him as 6:10 a.m. when he departed and all the time is 6:50 a.m. and he has just reached here. the current drive time from concord is 75 minutes. this is normally a 45 minute trip. at least, an extra hour time was added. i expect this to grow and even 580 is backing up all the
